Best Buys from Bordeaux 2009
June 28th 2010, by Gavin
All over now bar the shouting.
Here, in my humble opinion, are the Best Buys – at the opening prices – of Bordeaux 2009, broken down as follows:
10 Expensive wines – but sound investments.
£400 to £1000 – 17 Fabulous quality, blue chip names.
£200 – £300 – This is where the values of 2009 lie: 20 cracking wines.
Under £200 - 12 lovely wines from the Left Bank.
The 2009 columns, on the left, show the price per case in £ En Primeur (EP) from UK merchants. Then my scores (GQ) and Robert Parker’s, using the 100 point system, Jancis Robinson’s out of 20. On the right, I tasted all the top 2005s in bottle for Wine & Spirit magazine for the Dec 2007 issue, five months before Robert Parker released his final scores, followed by both the price EP and now.
10 Expensive – but sound investments
That is, at the opening prices shown. To show all the First Growths would be boring, so here’s my personal selection. Clinet, for example, which I tweeted as ‘a Must Buy’, was released ex-Chateau at €58, or £820 to the consumer, is now being offered by the UK’s biggest merchant at £1600.

£200 – £300
This is where the values of 2009 lie: 20 cracking wines that would grace any cellar. In some cases, such as de Fieuzal and La Tour Figeac, prices have yet to catch up with quality. And you can’t say that about many top wines in 2009. Rouget, for £300, is right opposite L’Eglise Clinet and Clos l’Eglise in Pomerol – and they cost £3400 and £1500 respectively.

12 lovely wines from the Left Bank: Poujeaux and Chasse Spleen for around £200 are favourites, while Labégorce, not really liked by Parker, is good value. The Wine Society are also offering Fourcas-Borie, another Listrac, which is terrific for £98.

this is a great read – a friend of mine was telling me that £10K on a Lafitte 2009 EP was still a great price….i just don’t have that capital to invest…however i will try some of your tips here, some for drinking and maybe the odd one for investing – cheers! i do not have a cellar though, so what’s the best advice?

Hi Julian
Thanks for the comment. As I said in my email reply to you concerning commercial storage, have a read of this recent article http://blog.bauduc.com/2010/05/25/bordeaux-2009-en-primeur-buyers-guide-20-questions-answers/ which you’ll find in the Bordeaux 09 section on the right, or search under the En Primeur tag. Hi ‘Bag’
Leoville Poyferré is now over £1000 a case of 12 but it was first released – i.e. the initial tranche or opening offer of stock – on 21st June at €72 ex-negociant (ex-Bordeaux price to UK merchants); as you can see from this link.
On €72 you’d normally expect to see an 18% mark-up by merchants, i.e. £860 a case, immediately post 21st June. Many UK merchants, however, held back their first offer as they wanted to balance out the first tranche offer with subsequent offers out of Bordeaux, as it was clear that the price was going to rise thanks to a 97-100 score from Parker. As I say at the top of the post, at the opening price it was a great buy but the price will settle down now. (Currently 1050 -1100 a case). I’d be interested to see the Wine Society’s price. Thanks for this super analysis Gavin. I look forward to your follow-up scores.
And, using your tips, i have taken a 2009 punt on Montrose, Pontet Canet and Cantemerle.
Hopefully the first two will work as investments, since I certainly cannot afford to drink them. However with prices so high I am not convinced the gamble will pay off. Also, thanks for the superb tour of your vineyards two weeks ago.

Forgive me for not replying sooner. I hope you had a chance to look through my other detailed reports on the 2009s v 2005s v 2008s for ideas. Off the top of my head, I’d recommend spending just a tad more if you want to see the best financial return. A case of Beychevelle at £550 would be a wise move, as the Chinese will be going for it as time goes on. I like Larcis Ducasse at £450 – under-rated by RP, and a small production. Within your budget, Lagrange in St-Julien isn’t a rare wine as it’s a big estate but if someone bought me a case of 6 magnums (£400), I’d be very happy in 20 years time. Or buy two cases for the money – a case of Poujeaux at £200, or du Tertre at £250, plus a case of Labégorce for £165.September 28th, 2010 at 10:39 pm. Permalink.

Insightful as always and used in conjunction with the scriblings of a few other notable writers, I decided to dip into my children’s inheritance and opted for just one blend of 2009 juice (Haut-Bages Libéral). Hope it’s as enjoyable as a few previous vintages I’ve had.
